I recommend that you pre-wash and square off your fabric to prevent any problems. When cutting your pattern pieces in twill, always lay your fabric flat and cut one layer at a time. The same advice goes for denim. When sewing with black 12 oz twill, consider using a size 16 jeans needle, which glides smoothly through the fabric while minimizing damage. If you don’t find the topstitching thread that you like, try threading your needle from two spools (or one spool and a bobbin). It will mimic beautifully heavy-duty topstitching thread.
