Fall Work Comfort
October 13, 2023
by Heather Pennie

As the leaves begin to change and the temperatures start to drop, it’s time for me to update my wardrobe with cozy and comfortable pieces for the fall season. Whether I’m rushing through workdays or planning a weekend away by the campfire, comfort is key for me.  I’ll walk you through creating two versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched with your existing wardrobe items. Plus, I’ll explore the use of two-sided fabric to give options when creating the top.

Let’s dive into the details of creating a plaid knit top and stretchy wide-leg pants, using the Jalie Caroline #4346 and Sylvie #4129 patterns.

Creating the Plaid Knit Top: Jalie Caroline Raglan Tee and Tunic #4346

  • Selecting the Fabric: I always enjoy colour-blocking with two-sided fabrics.  It is easier using a single fabric rather than different types of fabrics because then you don’t have to worry about fabric weights and stretch working well together.   After perusing Pinterest, I decided that I wanted to add some more plaid to my wardrobe and decided to go with  Plaid & Jacquard Fashion Knit – Beige/Blue.  This fabric has a nice weight to it for cooler fall weather and ample horizontal stretch (no vertical stretch).

  • Unique Feature: With a two-sided fabric, you have the option to showcase either the plaid or solid black side.  I like to lay out the cut fabric pieces and take photos of all the different colour-blocking options before making my final decision.

  • Here is what I finally decided:  I used the black reverse for the collar, cuffs and hem band.  The nice part of this option is that I didn’t need to try and do any plaid matching for those areas.

Stretchy Wide-Leg Pants: Jalie Sylvie #4129

  • Fabric Selection: Opt for a comfortable stretch fabric for the Jalie Sylvie pants, such as this Manilla knit, which is a modal and spandex knit. It keeps you warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot.  This will provide the flexibility needed for all-day comfort.
  • Wide-Leg Styling: The wide-leg design of these pants not only adds comfort but also makes them a versatile choice for both work and casual settings. I really like the wide waistband for comfort and the addition of a non-roll elastic into the band keeps the pants in place all day.

Mix and Match Styling Tips

  • For a polished work look, pair the plaid knit top with black trousers and throw on a black blazer.
  • Transition to a casual weekend vibe by matching the plaid top with your favorite jeans or a denim jacket.
  • Combine the wide-leg pants with a simple blouse or t-shirt for a relaxed weekend look.
  • Accessorize with scarves, belts, or jewelry to personalize your outfit further.

Conclusion: With the Jalie Caroline #4346 top and Jalie Sylvie #4129 wide-leg pants in my fall wardrobe, I’ll have versatile and comfortable pieces that can effortlessly transition from workdays to leisurely weekends. I plan to enjoy the cozy, stretchy comfort of these pieces as I embrace the beauty of the fall season.
