Sew an Embroidered Eyelet Shirt

Embroidered eyelet shirts seem to be trending everywhere. Though I tend to dress more casually these days, a woven collared shirt is easy to dress up or down. By pairing the Fabricville In Bloom embroidered fabric with the Jalie Florence shirt pattern, you can create a stunning shirt in an afternoon. You can sew an eyelet shirt in every colour of the rainbow!

The Jalie Florence 4020 shirt and shirtdress pattern is one of the easiest blouse patterns that I have sewn. This is in part because of the scalloped selvedge of the fabric. You will see later on in the post how I used this for a super simple hem.

From the website:

Boxy button-front shirt and shirtdress with band collar, cut-in sleeves finished with a band, and rectangle chest pockets.

  • The shirt (A) hits just above high hips.

  • The dress version hits just above the knee and includes in-seam pockets.

Trace your size from the pattern and cut out the fabric. I really liked the scalloped selvedge detail, so I decided to lay out the shirt front and back with the scallops along the bottom hem. This made the final finishing so easy. You could also try this for a sleeve hem, but it would require changing the construction details.

Align the scallops with the bottom hem area when cutting your fabric.

Stitch the back pleat and sew the upper and lower back pieces together.

On the front panels, apply interfacing, then fold and press the front placket.

The sleeves are so easy on this shirt. Essentially, they are cut-on short sleeves and then finished with a sleeve band.

Next, add the collar to the blouse. I topstitched the seam allowance towards the body of the shirt to give it a finished look.

The final step is to add buttons or snaps. I didn’t want to fuss with buttonholes in the embroidered fabric, so I found these decorative snaps in my stash. Fabricville offers a wide variety of fastener options to suit the finish details you want. I really like the pearl snaps, and they would definitely dress up a shirt.

And that’s it! This will likely be the fastest and easiest shirt you have sewn.

You could have a whole wardrobe of these shirts for spring in a variety of colours, fabrics and fasteners. I think I will sew up an eyelet version of the dress next – it has pockets!

Happy Sewing!
