Sewing is also about experimenting! This summer, I wanted to make myself a short, collarless jacket with a sporty chic vibe. I chose a solid black cotton-linen blend called Paralia and used McCall’s pattern #M8565.
What won me over right away? The white contrast topstitching on dark fabric. That little detail makes all the difference and gives the jacket that polished “expert home-sewn” feel… even though, let’s be honest, getting those topstitches just right can be quite the challenge!
It was also my first time using a unisex pattern — a bit of a gamble! I went with the large size, thinking it would be just right… but surprise: the fit was very generous. Even with a 1-inch seam allowance, the jacket still turned out roomy. I could easily have gone with a medium.
I chose the collarless version with four buttons. I especially love the silver buttons I picked — they complement the black fabric and white stitching beautifully.
The fabric, a lovely blend of 80% cotton and 20% linen, was a real pleasure to work with. After a good pre-wash, everything came together smoothly. I made sure to mark every piece carefully — a key step, especially when it came to placing those large patch pockets on the front. Starting with precision really makes the final result look neat and professional. Just goes to show: in sewing, the smallest details make the biggest impact!
To pair with the jacket, I wanted a pop of color. I went for bright red pants — perfect for adding a bold touch to the outfit. I chose AVA suiting, a lightweight and stretchy fabric that’s both easy to sew and super comfortable to wear. It was a project I completed in one go, no fuss, no adjustments — pure joy!
To be fair, I had already tested this pattern (Simplicity #S8701) in a pink twill with a denim-like finish, so I knew what to expect. This red version fits just as nicely, which confirms this pattern is hands down my favorite of the year!
Of course, wide-leg pants aren’t for everyone — but personally, I love them. I find the cut elongates the figure and adds a touch of elegant retro flair.
I sewed a matching fabric belt, but I also like to switch it up with a leather one to cinch the waist and give the outfit a more structured look. After all, no matter how well a garment is made, it’s how you style it that truly makes it your own!
This jacket and pants combo, with its sporty chic style, has quickly become a staple in my summer wardrobe. Comfortable, stylish, and easy to wear, it’s versatile enough for the office, a day out shopping, or a casual dinner on the patio. It’s exactly the kind of outfit I love: effortlessly put-together, with just the right amount of flair to stand out… and most importantly, sewn with love!
