While patiently waiting for spring to come back, I am slowly building my Spring Wardrobe. I was so excited to see McCall’s pattern early spring pattern release. McCall’s 7537 caught my eyes and I knew I had to make my own version of this dress! This is view B.
I found the perfect fabric match in Fabricville’s new Spring collection! Lili Rayon Coordinate in Tie Dye Coral/grey. This 100% rayon is soft and light. I did not line my dress but on second thought I would suggest lining this fabric. I will probably wear this dress with a slip.
I took the time to check the finished measurements for the bodice and midriff. I decided to trace and cut a size 8 for the bodice and a size 12 for the midriff and skirt. Cutting the fabric was a breeze using my rotary cutter and self-healing mat. This fabric does fray a little.
Assembling the dress was smooth. The fabric followed the feed dog without any issues, using my regular pressure foot. I made sure to finish my seam allowances all around using the Mock french Seam technique. I also used a little bit of bias tape on the seam allowances where I inserted my invisible zip. My hems were completed using the narrow hem method.
I was pleased with the end result. However, getting there was a little journey…! I had a few issues with the bodice. The front split is way too deep. If it wasn’t for the two buttons I added, the split would reveal skin way pass my bust. While constructing the bodice, I was afraid that the length would be too short. So I decided to complete the midriff and skirt portion and baste it to the bodice. I was able to find the right undergarment to make it fit.
I think that this fabric gives the dress a WOW factor! The rayon is so comfortable to wear. The fabric flows nicely and those colors are perfect for Spring! I’m in love with this silhouette I was able to achieve because of the beautiful drape of Lili Rayon! Can’t get enough of this fabric! I can easily see it being transformed in an off-shoulder top, a jumpsuit or a long flowy maxi dress! They have so many other prints and solid in this collection! We’ll see what else I’ll grab on my next trip to Fabricville!
Do you love sewing with rayon fabric? You should definitively grab this one! This fabric just made it on my favorite fabric list!
Talk to you soon!
