This project is all about creating a vintage\u2011looking shirtdress with beautiful drama and movement, using McCall\u2019s 8556<\/a>. If you\u2019re dreaming of a classic silhouette with a full skirt and crisp details, this pattern delivers exactly that\u2026 with a few caveats worth knowing before you begin.<\/p>\n

Pattern:<\/strong> McCall\u2019s 8556<\/a>
\nA button\u2011front shirtdress, close\u2011fitting at the waist, featuring a notched collar, short cuffed sleeves with button tabs, a full gathered skirt with side\u2011seam pockets, a baby hem, and multiple length options.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Fabrication Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before anything else, let\u2019s talk about the sleeve cuffs\u2014because the instructions (steps 16\u201321) are unfortunately incorrect. Following them as written results in exposed raw edges inside the sleeve and a cuff that ends up much narrower than the pattern photos suggest. I learned this the hard way and had to unpick the entire thing.<\/p>\n

After some research, I discovered several sewists had the same issue. Some opted to skip the cuff entirely, but I loved the look too much to give it up. Here\u2019s the method that worked beautifully for me:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Sew the cuffs and sleeves separately (not flat, as instructed).<\/li>\n
  2. Attach the right side of the cuff to the wrong side of the sleeve.<\/li>\n
  3. Flip the cuff up so the inside of the sleeve looks clean and finished.<\/li>\n
  4. Turn in about 1″ of the cuff to achieve that wide, dramatic cuff shown in the pattern photos.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    This approach gives a polished interior and the proper cuff width.<\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

    What I Liked (and Didn\u2019t)<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Aside from the cuff instructions, I genuinely love everything about this pattern. The silhouette is flattering, feminine, and wonderfully vintage. The neckline is a bit loose on me, so I may add a small snap or pin at the bust to prevent gaping.<\/p>\n

    \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Fabric Used<\/strong><\/p>\n

    I chose a cotton voile from the Everyday Blues<\/em> collection<\/a>. It\u2019s lightweight, breathable, and perfect for all the gathers and volume in this design. I wouldn\u2019t recommend anything heavy\u2014this dress shines in airy fabrics.<\/p>\n

    \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Pattern Alterations<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Corrected the sleeve cuff construction (see notes above).<\/li>\n
    2. Because I used a border print, I cut the skirt as one large rectangle, which meant omitting the pockets.<\/li>\n
    3. I added about 2″ to the waistband. One of the perks of this pattern is that the bodice and skirt are gathered, so adjusting the waistband length is incredibly easy\u2014just redistribute the gathers evenly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Final Thoughts<\/strong><\/p>\n

      In cotton voile, this dress feels cool, floaty, and perfect for warm spring days. I\u2019m thrilled with how it turned out and can already imagine wearing it throughout the season.<\/p>\n
