{"id":535,"date":"2016-06-01T18:47:48","date_gmt":"2016-06-01T18:47:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/?p=535"},"modified":"2016-08-26T15:56:33","modified_gmt":"2016-08-26T15:56:33","slug":"mccalls-7351-summer-shirtdress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/en\/mccalls-7351-summer-shirtdress\/","title":{"rendered":"McCalls 7351: A Summer Shirtdress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; padding-left: 30px;\">I am declaring\u00a0this the summer of\u00a0the\u00a0shirtdress, to help me\u00a0overcome my fear of buttonholes and\u00a0to\u00a0challenge myself a little!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Luckily for me, I was able to choose <a href=\"http:\/\/fabricville.com\/en\/m7351-misses-shirtdresses-with-pockets-and-belt-size-14-16-18-20-22.html\" target=\"_blank\">McCalls 7351<\/a>\u00a0(I used View D)\u00a0to start my shirtdress journey,\u00a0as it came <a href=\"http:\/\/sewing.patternreview.com\/review\/pattern\/123106\" target=\"_blank\">recommended as a beginner-level pattern\u00a0on PatternReview<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I received it as my latest Fabricville project along with this beautiful cotton &#8211; an <a href=\"http:\/\/fabricville.com\/en\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=native+beadwork\" target=\"_blank\">exclusive print made for Fabricville in three colourways<\/a>, and quite irresistible! I like all three colours, but was really drawn to this bright and cheery aqua.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-Jn-5zWZQWYU\/V05JOaA25WI\/AAAAAAAAHUw\/2ra2yLg951wXfGajfOCL2yY7LgjFEYh8ACLcB\/s640\/Blue%2BBeaded%2BFloral%2BShirt%2BDress%2B%252850%2529.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"406\" height=\"541\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The making of this dress\u00a0has been delayed somewhat &#8211; ironically &#8211; by my recent trip to Chicago and Pattern Review Weekend! But I powered down when I got home and learned a lot of new things with my first ever shirtdress\u00a0project. It helped that McCall&#8217;s is currently hosting a <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mccall.com\/2016\/05\/04\/shirtdress-sew-along-lets-get-going\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sewalong<\/a> &#8211; lots of tips and support on their blog and the FB group associated with it to keep me motivated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I am really pleased with this dress! It fits well &#8211; I used size 14 at neck and shoulders and graded out to 16 by bust &amp; waist. I do feel like it&#8217;s a teeny bit big at the waist but it is super comfortable so I can live with that! \ud83d\ude42 Next time I might make it just halfway between 14 &amp; 16 &#8212; a modified size 15, if you will, haha.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/--MzLSjcarZw\/V05JR7_yczI\/AAAAAAAAHU4\/wjHJD2hEiBQKlTXVTaQc8t12Fr8-wQmogCLcB\/s640\/Blue%2BBeaded%2BFloral%2BShirt%2BDress%2B%252853%2529.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I love the way the neck fits and the swishiness of the skirt. It&#8217;s a really lovely thing to wear. It&#8217;s drafted well and it includes pockets, always a plus in my books. I had the perfect buttons in my stash, so I was delighted to finally use them!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-xrDSvLvmPRQ\/V05LAC1-XcI\/AAAAAAAAHVE\/KGgEg_NKYJk_4aAZU66LXOvQD8zVbsO5gCLcB\/s400\/Blue%2BBeaded%2BFloral%2BShirt%2BDress%2B%252847%2529.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The dress was straightforward, although I did make a few changes to the construction process as I went:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<li>Instead of attaching the yoke as in the instructions, I used the &#8216;burrito technique&#8217;, or as it is called in my trusty Readers Digest Complete Guide to Sewing, the &#8216;couture technique&#8217;. It worked great and the yoke looks lovely all enclosed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<li>I watched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OGKoGsZ8Ga8\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Pincushion video<\/a> to help me understand how to attach the front bands. I really mean it when I say I&#8217;ve never made a shirtdress (or any kind of button down shirt) before.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">This is a solid design &#8211; it works like it should. I did practice my buttonholes on scrap fabric quite a few times before I had the courage to make them for real. And I even have an automatic buttonholer to help me. But it all turned out \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It took me quite a while, but I love the result.
