Finding Inspiration<\/span><\/h2>\n

Have you ever been inspired by the elegant and professional style of characters from your favorite TV series? That’s exactly what happened to me after watching the American series “Succession.” The impeccable outfits of Siobhan “Shiv” Roy, especially those featuring the classic Prince of Wales check pattern, truly captivated me. This pattern is incredibly versatile, adapting seamlessly to both professional attire and more casual styles, depending on the cut and design of the garments you choose.<\/span><\/p>\n

Choosing the Pattern and Fabric<\/h2>\n

For my first autumn sewing project, I opted for a brushed knit fabric called “Trendy Check and Jacquard” from Fabricville (MD3419-011<\/a>). This medium-weight fabric is not only soft and plush to the touch but also stretchy, offering optimum comfort and freedom of movement.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for the pattern, I selected the unlined coat in version D of Butterick’s B6394<\/a> model. This sewing pattern, categorized as “Fast and Easy,” consists of just four pieces to cut out: the front, the back, the facing, and the sleeve. It’s perfect for sewing beginners. However, working with checkered fabrics can sometimes present alignment challenges. For my project, I made sure the predominant horizontal lines were properly aligned, especially on the front pieces. Although the sides aren’t perfectly matched, it goes unnoticed since the check patterns don’t have highly contrasting colors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recommendations<\/h2>\n

I recommend choosing a size slightly smaller than your usual size because this coat has a rather roomy fit. Personally, I had to reduce mine by an inch on each side, including under the sleeves. Additionally, if you’re using a soft knit fabric similar to mine, be cautious when applying interfacing with an iron and when ironing the collar and front edges. In my experience, using a pressing cloth is the best option to prevent damaging the fabric and staining the iron’s soleplate with fiber residues.<\/span><\/p>\n

As someone passionate about sewing coats, I intend to value and utilize again this pattern. It not only offers a straightforward and efficient assembly but also lays a strong foundation. Version C, with its contrasting bottom band, particularly captivates my attention. In my view, combining faux leather with boucl\u00e9 fabric holds the promise of achieving a striking outcome.<\/p>\n

In the end, I’m highly satisfied with my Prince of Wales check coat. Its classic style and versatility make it a perfect choice, whether paired with skirts, pants, or jeans. It offers exceptional comfort and will be my ideal companion for my commutes to work this autumn.<\/span><\/p>\n
