{"id":9959,"date":"2025-04-24T10:30:16","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T14:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/?p=9959"},"modified":"2025-04-24T10:31:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T14:31:10","slug":"my-colourful-sewing-adventure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/en\/my-colourful-sewing-adventure\/","title":{"rendered":"My Colourful Sewing Adventure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0Colourful Fabric in my Sewing Room<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It&#8217;s been an exciting week, (yes, sewing with new fabric makes me giddy.)\u00a0 This arrived on my doorstep!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The fabric wasn&#8217;t a surprise, but I chose it ON-LINE!\u00a0 Seeing and feeling it in person firmed up my sewing plans for it.\u00a0 The wild print is a very sheer mesh called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/fabricville.com\/collections\/stella-mesh-crochet\">STELLA<\/a>&#8220;, colour is called &#8221; 002 blue&#8221; and the solid royal blue is a bottom weight suiting named <a href=\"https:\/\/fabricville.com\/collections\/demi-suiting\">DEMI<\/a>, colour 010 blue.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9961 size-medium\" style=\"text-align: center;\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/the-order-533x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"533\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/the-order-533x400.jpg 533w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/the-order-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/the-order-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/the-order-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/the-order-755x566.jpg 755w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Which Patterns to Use?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I had 3 garments in mind, 2 tops and a pair of pants; all are Jalie (a Canadian company) sewing patterns.\u00a0 As a Jalie Creative Ambassador,\u00a0 I&#8217;ve have sewn their patterns for years, and used 3 of my favorite Jalie patterns.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9970 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/DSCN8832-461x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"461\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/DSCN8832-461x1024.jpg 461w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/DSCN8832-180x400.jpg 180w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/DSCN8832-692x1536.jpg 692w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/DSCN8832-922x2048.jpg 922w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/DSCN8832-755x1677.jpg 755w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/DSCN8832-scaled.jpg 1153w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 461px) 100vw, 461px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Jalie&#8217;s Dolman 3352<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The mesh became a <a href=\"https:\/\/fabricville.com\/products\/jalie-pattern-3352-dolman-tops?_pos=1&amp;_sid=d00ae56f5&amp;_ss=r\">Dolman #3352<\/a>, the version with sleeves.\u00a0 This such a versatile pattern and I&#8217;ve sewn many variations of it over the years.\u00a0 It does have a wide neck, and my version has been altered to make it narrower.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I wondered if the mesh was going to be a challenge to work with, and in some ways it was.\u00a0 My rough hands and the very light weight of the fabric had me using a lot of hand lotion.\u00a0 My serger was put to good use for most of the construction, just a 4-thread overlock.\u00a0 The pinning was easy, but the fabric was so light that by the time I got the intended seam to the serger it had slithered out of line. That problem was solved by using 1\/4 inch wide strips of Heat n Bond Featherlite and fusing the first couple of centimeters together, before serging the seam.\u00a0 I serged right over it, and it make starting the seam much easier to handle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I used a &#8220;standard&#8221; neckband, (not the one in the pattern)\u00a0 cut 2 inches wide and 85% of the neck measured at the sewing line.\u00a0 Then I top-stitched using a &#8220;serpentine&#8221; stitch.\u00a0 I REALLY like the look of it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9969 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_3660-533x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"533\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_3660-533x400.jpg 533w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_3660-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_3660-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_3660-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_3660-755x566.jpg 755w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The sleeve insertion and the side seams went well, again I used the Heat n Bond at the beginning of every seam.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The hem presented 2 challenges, the fabric itself and dealing with turning up an even hem at the curve.\u00a0 I solved the curve problem by putting fusible thread in the upper looper of my serger, setting the differential to 1.5, lengthening my stitch to 3mm and loosening off the tension in that upper looper.\u00a0 Then with the right side of the fabric against the feed teeth I slowly serge finished the back curve (which gathered it) , then reset the differential back to normal before serge finished the front.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">After that, pressing up the hem with the fusible thread was painless.\u00a0 (Be sure to trim the fusible thread tail before you press.)\u00a0 I top-stitched the hem in place with the same serpentine stitch I used to top-stitch the neck.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9962 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dolman-cover-306x400.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"306\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dolman-cover-306x400.png 306w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dolman-cover.png 495w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/fabricville.com\/products\/jalie-pattern-3677-helene-shawl-collar-cardigan?_pos=1&amp;_sid=3d4388d02&amp;_ss=r\">Jalie&#8217;s Helene 3677<\/a><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The mesh also became a cardigan, <a href=\"https:\/\/fabricville.com\/products\/jalie-pattern-3677-helene-shawl-collar-cardigan?_pos=1&amp;_sid=3d4388d02&amp;_ss=r\">Jalie&#8217;s Helene #3677<\/a>.\u00a0 Although this pattern has been around for a few years, it was new to me this year after I was asked to teach it virtually for That Sewing Place, Newmarket.\u00a0 I fell in love with the pattern, made one to test the fit, love it and now I have 2 Helenes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9971 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_9946-scaled-e1743517850640-236x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_9946-scaled-e1743517850640-236x400.jpg 236w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_9946-scaled-e1743517850640-604x1024.jpg 604w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_9946-scaled-e1743517850640-906x1536.jpg 906w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_9946-scaled-e1743517850640-1208x2048.jpg 1208w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_9946-scaled-e1743517850640-755x1280.jpg 755w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_9946-scaled-e1743517850640.jpg 1412w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9972 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_9949-266x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_9949-266x400.jpg 266w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_9949-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_9949-1023x1536.jpg 1023w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_9949-1364x2048.jpg 1364w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_9949-755x1134.jpg 755w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_9949-scaled.jpg 1705w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It&#8217;s an &#8220;edge to edge&#8221; cardigan, so no buttons, buttonholes or zippers, this is an easy-to-sew garment.\u00a0 The front pockets make it useful, and the sheerness of this fabric makes it perfect for summer.\u00a0 Pressing up the 3\/4-inch hems was another challenge, but using strips of\u00a0 the Heat n Bond to fuse them prior to sewing helped.\u00a0 I again used the &#8220;serpentine&#8221; stitch for hemming.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9964 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/helene-cover-320x400.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/helene-cover-320x400.jpeg 320w, https:\/\/blog.fabricville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/helene-cover.jpeg 525w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/fabricville.com\/products\/jalie-pattern-3676-vanessa-fluid-pants?_pos=1&amp;_sid=ce0679fcd&amp;_ss=r\">Jalie&#8217;s Vanessa 3676<\/a><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The solid Royal blue became a pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/fabricville.com\/products\/jalie-pattern-3676-vanessa-fluid-pants?_pos=1&amp;_sid=ce0679fcd&amp;_ss=r\">Jalie&#8217;s Vanessa #3676<\/a>, described as &#8220;fluid pull-on pants&#8221;.
