If you use stretch (like I did), keep the added ease in mind when fitting and <strong>make sure to interface the waistband<\/strong>\u2014otherwise it can grow over time.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Notions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Sewing thread<\/li>\n<li>Topstitch thread<br \/>\n<em>(or use regular thread with a triple straight stitch for a similar look)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>2 jeans buttons<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pellon fusible interfacing<\/strong> (for waistband)<\/li>\n<li>Twill tape \/ stay tape <em>(optional, for reinforcing pocket edges)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Needles<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Denim needle<\/li>\n<li>Topstitch needle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Tools<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Sewing machine<\/li>\n<li>Cutting mat and rotary cutter<\/li>\n<li>Fabric scissors + thread snips<\/li>\n<li>Pins or clips<\/li>\n<li>Marking chalk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Pattern<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/smartpattern.de\/en\/product\/barrel-leg-jeans-individual\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smartPattern Barrel Leg Jeans<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Made-to-Measure Pattern<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The biggest feature of this pattern is the option to use the <strong>custom configurator<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t just pick a size\u2014you choose:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>leg shape (light \u2192 strong barrel)<\/li>\n<li>dart placement (hem + knee options)<\/li>\n<li>waistband type + height<\/li>\n<li>pocket styles, yoke shape, length<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then input your measurements, and the pattern is generated for you.\u00a0 You can choose from generic size versions as well, and this is a great option if your measurements align well with their size charts.<\/p>\n<p>If you go for a custom pattern, be aware that the\u00a0pattern is built entirely around your measurements, so accuracy matters. The fit you get is only as good as what you put in.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Construction: Where the Shape Comes From<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The barrel shape isn\u2019t just \u201cwide legs\u201d\u2014it\u2019s engineered through structure:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Knee darts + hem darts create the curve (all optional)<\/li>\n<li>The silhouette is wider through the hip and thigh, then tapers toward the ankle. That\u2019s what gives it that sculpted look instead of just \u201cbaggy jeans.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 18.72px;\">Sewing my Barrel Jeans<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There are very detailed instructions, including photographs and videos, on the <a href=\"https:\/\/smartpattern.de\/en\/instructions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smartPattern website<\/a>. You can find them <a href=\"https:\/\/smartpattern.de\/en\/instructions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preparing your Fabric<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Always prewash and dry denim before using. This removes any excess dye and ensures that any shrinkage happens before you sew your jeans.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will print or use a projector for your PDF pattern. Then, cut out all pattern pieces, interface the waistband following the manufacturer&rsquo;s instructions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sewing the Darts<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Begin by sewing the knee darts on the jeans, if that is an option you have chosen.\u00a0 I used two darts because I really liked the visual impact, and that is also why I chose to topstitch on both sides of the dart. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sewing the Barrel Jeans Front Pockets<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You will cut the front pocket facings from the main denim fabric. Detailed instructions can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/smartpattern.de\/en\/instructions\/sew-fly-with-zipper-in-jeans-trousers-z02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Your next step will be to add the side seam wedge insert. This gives shape to the barrel jeans. After this, the yoke pieces will be attached to the back legs of the jeans. The backs will be attached to the side wedges, and the jeans will then be joined at the crotch seam. Be sure to topstitch along the way<\/p>\n<h4>*Tip: If you have two sewing machines, I strongly suggest threading one machine with your topstitching thread and your other machine with your construction thread. Once I knew I didn&rsquo;t require any further alterations, I attached the belt loops and added the back pockets. A hammer or mallet and a towel to cushion the button when attaching made light work of the no-sew button.
