Long, insulated, hooded and water repellent \u2013 that\u2019s what we were looking for in a fall raincoat. Fabricville came to the rescue with an excellent proposition for fabric \u2013 pattern combination. It was dark\u00a0red\u00a0soft\u00a0shell<\/a>\u00a0and Burda 6596<\/a>,\u00a0with\u00a0red\u00a0separating\u00a0zipper<\/a>.<\/span> Other notions included\u00a0<\/span>Gutermann\u00a0420\u00a0dark\u00a0red\u00a0thread and Unique double\u00a0fold\u00a0bias\u00a06mm tape in\u00a0dark\u00a0red.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u00a0<\/span><\/b>conquered<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>my<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>fears<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I\u00a0<\/span>started<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>project<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>uncertain<\/span>\u00a0I\u00a0<\/span>could<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>bring<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>it<\/span>\u00a0to a\u00a0<\/span>successful<\/span>\u00a0completion<\/span>. Why? Because I did not work with soft shell fabric before, I was not sure my sewing machine could handle the thickness of several layers of the fabric, and the changes I hoped to make to the hood pattern were intimidating. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alas, m<\/span>y fears were unsubstantiated! Soft shell is a dream to work with: it\u2019s stable, does not fray and slides smoothly in the machine. I also found out that it can be pressed. The changes to the hood pattern were easy to introduce. I just trimmed about 3cm from the top of the hood and cut a 10cm (5cm x 2) band from the back. It created a sportier-looking hood.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Patternwork<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and bias tapes<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

As for other pattern adjustments, I lengthened the body of the coat about 15cm and shortened the sleeves by 4cm. Other than that \u2013 just followed the pattern instructions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since I decided to make the coat without lining, I chose to finish the seams with a bias tape. Without a specialty presser foot, it is a bit of hassle to sew on cleanly. But the result is worth it, producing a cleverly finished unlined interior.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The drawbacks of the project<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Please pay attention to the pockets \u2013 they are minuscule! And without a zipper, they will not hold more than a <\/span>Kleenex<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Soft shell does not crease (hurray!),\u00a0but\u00a0to flatten the seams, I had to sew every seam down, and together with the bias tape, every seam was sewn 5 times!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The pattern suggests to stop the zipper at the beginning of the collar. I chose to install it all the way up to the top of the hood opening, for those windy days.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Pay attention to the seam junctions. I had to trim heavily at the gorge-hood level to attach the body facing.\u00a0<\/span>Altogether<\/span>, there were 12 layers!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

     <\/p>\n

    The successes of the project<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n
      \n
    1. The fit is incredible! Firstly, the princess seams contour the body in all the right places without restricting the movements. Secondly, the armhole is quite high, but at the same time very comfortable.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. The\u00a0soft shell\u00a0fabric is fantastic \u2013 warm, water repellent, and it is died a great red colour.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. This jacket \/ coat is quick to sew, especially if you already have a tried and tested way to sew bias tape. Alternatively, you may opt for other ways to finish the seams, or install the lining.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
